We have been through many different phases of minimalism. Or, at least, the illusion of minimalism. From the beloved “old money aesthetic” to the necessary “capsule wardrobe” trends, people can’t get enough of the same black tank top and dark washed jeans. In trying to partake in this trend, some people even end up buying even more clothes they don’t need nor know what to do with.
That’s not to say it’s not a killer outfit combination Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy would have been spotted in, but even the icon of simple fashion added a red coat or a pop of originality here and there.
To stay on top of how you dress, of course you should invest in a great pair of jeans, like (link reformation ones here), or a classic white shirt you can whip out at a moment’s notice, it’s time to elevate things a bit more.
It can be hard to bring originality constantly to every outfit if you purely focus on the clothing part of your style. Here are some ways to bring some of yourself back into what you wear without compromising whatever aesthetic you are aiming to achieve.
Charms:
Whether it be for your bag or your wrist, or even your neck, adding little bits of yourself can help make things just a bit more personal.
Charm bracelets have been around for decades, in many forms. From the children’s charm bracelets you can get at Disney World, to the diamond studded small charms on a gold bracelet, there is no shortage of this jewelry piece.
Considering they are understated and do not have to be very flashy, adding a charm bracelet to a simple look, or a date night outfit, can make you feel more you while maintaining the timelessness of the outfit you have chosen.
Ideas for charm bracelets can span signifying travel destinations to reminders of loved ones. In any case, it adds so much with so little.

In 2024, bag charms and “Jane birkinifying” was all the rage. Even major stores like Anthropologie had pre-made bag charms on their shelves. Well, that little pop of individuality is an ideal way to not take away from the “clean” vibe you might be shooting for!

Also featured recently are the statement necklaces that feature several different metals, gems, and items. A grey tank top and jeans is no longer completely casual when a chunky gold necklace with all your favorite things on it is added!

In any case, adding a miniature clover or a football or a video camera to your jewelry might make you feel THAT much more you.
For when you wear a skirt:
Perhaps a belt or some body jewelry!
Paris Hilton once said that mini skirts should be the size of a belt. While that might be true, adding a belt TO a skirt is also stylish. Adding a belt to a pleated skirt or a thin leather belt to a pencil skirt keeps the style of the clothing piece while also elevating it.
Low-rise skirt? A small gold body chain or belt might just be the answer to your outfit needs!

Stockings and Tights- not just a way to keep warm:
Your tights don’t have to be boring! Even if the little hint of something different is something only you can see underneath the skirt or dress, the idea that you are doing things your own way can make you feel that much more confident.
Or, try white tights/stockings, or translucent with a pattern. There is beauty in the mundane, so don’t count out your tights/stockings when evaluating how to change up your look!

A scarf – for anybody:
Scarves can be worn in countless different ways, in any season, in any place. A classic cable knit scarf is sure to keep you warm and looking cozy, while a silk scarf tied around your bag adds a personal effect.
Not to mention, the many ways they can be styled in your hair.
Done right, you can switch out your plain tube top for a silky tied scarf , pair it with jeans or a long skirt, and you’ve got a whole new outfit.
In this cold weather, wear a plaid wool scarf to any “timeless” outfit, and you will be warm and feeling more yourself!

A classic Burberry scarf:
Regardless of how you do it, it’s time to do away with the notion that to be put together, to be sustainable, and to be chic, you need to be boring. Yes, having a wardrobe full of pieces that are simple enough to wear time and time again and quality enough to last is important, but next time, add a little spark to the calm!
